Our Practice

How Finn Projects Uses RETScreen

RETScreen Expert underpins four core analyses we deliver to facility owners and operators — benchmark,
feasibility, performance, and portfolio analysis — as part of our energy consulting work across Ontario and
Canada.

01

Benchmark Analysis

We compare a building’s energy performance against relevant benchmarks, identifying where the greatest savings opportunities lie and prioritizing audit recommendations accordingly.

02

Energy Baselines & EWRB

We use RETScreen to model and compare energy technologies and scenarios, helping clients make confident decisions about capital investments — particularly when evaluating multiple competing retrofit options.

03

Energy Modelling

After a retrofit, RETScreen lets us track actual energy performance against projected savings, giving clients verified proof of results and supporting ongoing measurement and verification reporting.

04

Measurement & Verification

For clients managing multiple properties, RETScreen supports portfolio-wide energy tracking and reporting — a consolidated view of performance for housing providers, municipalities, and institutional owners.

Client Examples

RETScreen in Practice

The following examples illustrate how Finn Projects has used RETScreen Expert in real client
engagements.

Case Study 1

Performance & Portfolio Analysis

Ontario REIT: Multifamily Housing Portfolio

A portfolio of multifamily residential buildings undergoing natural gas equipment retrofits: new boilers, controls, and heating distribution improvements across multiple sites. Finn Projects used RETScreen Expert to develop weather-normalized utility baselines for each building prior to the retrofits, then tracked post-retrofit energy performance against those baselines to quantify actual savings. The performance analysis also informed controls optimization: where metered results showed savings below expectations, the data was used to tune equipment settings and improve outcomes. The portfolio-wide view in RETScreen allowed the client to compare results across buildings and prioritize where further work would have the most impact.

Case Study 2

Feasibility Analysis

Multifamily Housing Portfolio: Near Net-Zero Carbon Feasibility

A portfolio of multifamily housing buildings being evaluated for near net-zero and net-zero carbon retrofit pathways. Finn Projects used the RETScreen Energy Tool to model potential energy and emissions savings for a range of deep retrofit scenarios, comparing fuel-switching options, envelope upgrades, and mechanical system replacements. Each building model was calibrated against actual utility billing data to ensure the projections reflected real operating conditions rather than theoretical performance. The resulting analysis gave the client a clear picture of which combinations of measures could achieve carbon targets and at what cost, supporting capital planning and grant application development.
